Dwane Casey: A Look at the Life and Coaching Records of the Detroit Pistons’ Head Coach

Dwane Casey started his life in the small town of Indianapolis, Indiana. He was a basketball player and coach from an early age, having been a star player in college and then coaching at the NCAA level for over 10 years. After that, he moved on to the NBA, joining the Minnesota Timberwolves as head coach in 2005.

In 2011, Casey took over as head coach of the Toronto Raptors and continued to build his impressive resume. Led by the likes of Kyle Lowry and Demar DeRozan, he helped bring the Raptors to their first ever Atlantic Division Championship and achieved a franchise best 59-23 regular season record during the 2017-18 season. His work culminated with a Coach of The Year Award in 2018.

Casey has been married since 1993 to Brenda Jenkins Casey, a former college basketball player herself. They have two sons: Zachary (born 1995) and Justin (born 1998).

Since 2018, Casey has been head coach of the Detroit Pistons and is developing them into a formidable team in the Eastern Conference. With his wealth of experience both as a player and coach – combined with his close relationship with players – Dwane is well placed to continue making history.

Casey’s Success With the Toronto Raptors

Casey’s coaching career got a big boost when he was hired by the Toronto Raptors in 2011 and spent seven years as the team’s head coach. Under Casey, the Raptors became one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, making five trips to the playoffs and winning three consecutive Atlantic Division titles in 2013–14, 2014–15, and 2015–16. He also won Coach of the Year honors in 2018 for his work with Toronto after setting a single-season franchise record with 59 wins that year. During his time with Toronto, Casey compiled a 320–308 (.509) overall record with 10 postseason appearances.

In addition to his success on the court, Casey also brought stability to a franchise that had felt much turnover in recent years. His player-friendly approach brought out the best in his players and led to many surprising victories over higher-seeded opponents. He was beloved by both his players and coaches throughout his tenure with Toronto.

Casey is married to Brenda Casey and has three children: Tyrone, Zachary, and Amarah. The couple reside in Detroit during the NBA season and spend their summers near Dallas.

Moving to Detroit and Coaching the Pistons

You may not know this, but in 2018 Dwane Casey made the move from Toronto to Detroit – and became the head coach of the Pistons! Although it was a long way from his home in Kentucky, he settled in well with his wife Brenda and two children – both of whom attended Michigan State University.

Since taking up the post, Casey has worked tirelessly to build an effective coaching team for the Pistons. He’s improved their defensive tactics, as well as their offensive strategies. This was especially evident during the 2019-2020 season when they had an impressive record of 41-41 – which was even more impressive considering they had one of the youngest rosters in NBA history!

In addition to his coaching prowess, Casey also has achieved some amazing feats while at Detroit:

  1. On April 4th, 2019 he became the first Pistons coach since Chuck Daly in 1991 to lead them to a 50-win season and an Eastern Conference playoff berth.
  2. In June 2020, he was named Coach of The Year by the NBA Coaches Association for his accomplishments with the Pistons.
  3. He led Detroit to its first playoff series win since 2008 by defeating the Milwaukee Bucks 4-0 in 2019 and advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Clearly Dwane is a passionate leader who truly knows what it takes to succeed – both on and off the court!

Who Is Dwane Casey’s Wife?

She’s volunteered at numerous after-school programs, providing tutoring and mentoring to students of all ages. She’s also been active in charities that benefit disadvantaged children in Los Angeles.

Clearly, Dwane Casey values family above all else – something that can be seen in his coaching record:
